“The Girl Next Door” Laura
Fourth episode of the project “The Girl Next Door”
A few pills from the previous article and the reasons that led me to write this article.
“ More than 1 million selfies a day, 58,425.492 photos with the #selfie tag on Instagram: these numbers speak for themselves. Every day, social networks put our image in front of us and force us to question ourselves about our perception of beauty.
Through self-portraits it is easy to accept oneself: with an average of 25 photos before being really satisfied, the choice of the right filter and some tweaks to the brightness, you’re done.
Social media have accentuated the social tendency of human beings to please others and feel accepted. And let’s face it, we all feel, some more, some less, personally concerned.
Beauty in the days of Instagram requires perfection, precision, expertise, scenography. A beauty that is so different and far from you that almost intimidates and makes you feel embarrassed.
Beauty in the days of Instagram leads to the belief that you want to change yourself. Yet beauty or self-care should not be tied to any standard, but rather provide each of us with the right tools to be ourselves at our best, without necessarily having to transform into a clone of anyone to feel comfortable while sharing a photo of us with the hashtag #makeup or #beauty.
Be splendidly, exceptionally, proudly you, and make yourself messengers of the extraordinary power – and essence – of #beautydefect,a project born from the desire of the Vlogger Giulia Carucci, to create a network of truly aware people. Aware of their physicality, their strengths and weaknesses.
Let’s meet Laura,
a girl living her life in colour, very cheerful and smiling.
Colours are her world. Image and colour consultant, specialized in personalized colour analysis and personal branding. She works in Olbia, Cagliari and Milan.
But even Laura, although used to seeing her image in pictures, has so much to reveal about herself in front of the camera…
These are Laura’s thoughts:
I learnt about Emiliano’s project through Giulia Carucci. Being photographed by a person I did not know intrigued me very much: it meant completely entrusting my image to the eyes of a stranger and observing a different reading of me.
We met for a first chat and then for the shooting. . I chose the outfits I like and I often use to work. The makeup was made by Emiliana Sancamillo. They were the only aspects I could “control” in this experience. I work as an image consultant specialized in personal branding and colour consultancy: putting my figure in the hands of another professional made me feel vulnerable, as I never experienced before. At the moment, I am wearing a retainer and I was pleased to remember also this period of my life which contributed to shape the leitmotif of my life and profession: loving myself means taking care of myself.
I gave it a try, aware that I would have seen the photos only at the end, and I could not have interfered in the choice (I am vain and I like myself, so I was not scared of this).
The result? A “me” that I know but had never seen in the mirror or in a photo. I’ve never looked in the mirror while angry, I’ve never taken a shot feeling sad or sorry. Although during the shooting with Emiliano I was amused and cheerful, he was able to read and capture even my hidden thoughts. That was the magic.”
